Supermarket scene
Storyboard: Oli Lee
A young boy wanders through the East End of London as day breaks. His oversized clothes drape over him like a shroud. We will come to know the boy as Big Boots.
As Big Boots meanders aimlessly through the streets of London he makes some interesting encounters along the way; encounters which will both test his character and penultimately have a profound effect on his young life.
Big Boots is a powerful, moving "portrait miniature" of pre-adolescence, rebellion and betrayal; a film which will intrigue, move and emote without histrionics or intense drama. It is an intimate story, imbued with warmth and humanity and guaranteed emotional impact.
For me Big Boots is a film about searching for freedom. We are all free but sometimes we cannot see it, or we are simply distracted pursuing something else rather than what we really want, what will set us free.
I wrote the first draft 17 years ago out of a vivid dream. Back then it was a story about finding that we are not alone in this world and there are people who will understand us.
Now it is a story about a boy who looks for his identity in this cruel and sometimes overwhelming world. He is pure, innocent and naive.
He is yet to understand that the truth lies within himself and that he is the most valuable person in his world. He is free, and yes this is a sad story about loneliness, isolation, manipulation, control, deception, betrayal, disappointment, fear but also about hope, friendship, giving and taking, ambition, aspiration, happiness, determination, loyalty, devotion and love. It is a story about living out your dreams and struggling to set them free.
